In the real estate industry, sustainability certificates are treated as “green currency”. One of the most recognised worldwide is the certification of the “German Sustainable Building Council” (DGNB certification). The “Building in Operation 2020-Standard” is based on the assessments of the ecological, economic, socio-cultural and functional quality of a building.

Its focus is to provide comprehensive support to building and portfolio owners, and operators in optimising the evaluation criteria of their buildings and improving them in the long term, in order to fully utilise the potential for sustainable CO2 reduction and to make the buildings “fit for the future”.

The largest and most modern shopping centre in the heart of Vienna, “WIEN MITTE The Mall” – managed by CC Real – is the first shopping centre in Austria to be certified by the DGNB according to the “Building in Operation 2020 Standard” in Platinum – the highest possible certification. CC Real is currently also working on the certification of the “Millennium City” shopping centre in Vienna’s 20th district.

Platinum certification for “WIEN MITTE The Mall”, “Millennium City” to follow

The platinum status of the DGNB is only awarded to buildings that achieve an overall compliance rate of at least 80 percent.

The “WIEN MITTE The Mall” shopping centre was successful with a compliance rate of 82.9 per cent.

“Our property has a fully equipped metering, measuring and monitoring system consumption recording of electricity, heat, cooling and water. This system can then be used to implement energy optimisation measures,” explains Jürgen Haussecker, Managing Director CC Real and responsible for facility management.

Setting the benchmark for all shopping centres

In the run-up to the auditing phase, the CC Real team drew on the support and expertise of external consultants to optimise and improve energy and water consumption, waste reduction, a pollutant and environmental assessment, as well as the development of a corresponding concept to optimise and improve those aspects. This paved the way for a sustainable and future-oriented overall concept.

“The DGNB certification at platinum level is the reward for our intensive efforts to achieve more sustainability in all areas of the mall. We hope that other centres will follow our example, since the demand from investors, tenants and customers shows that sustainable buildings are increasingly important,” says “WIEN MITTE The Mall” centre manager Florian Richter, pleased that his efforts have been acknowledged.
